AHHHH!! My blog is fading away! I guess I need to start posting a little more often so that this doesn't happen again. So, why have I not been posting? Well, it all boils down to WORK! Yuk. No fun. Work. I haven't opened an IDE for fun in over a month. I think it is this project that I am on, all fuss and lots o muss.
Only a few books have caused me to continue turing pages until I had completed them. Foregoing Computer time, TV time, Family time or any other distraction (including food and shower) until the book was finished. As a matter of fact, there are now four books that have caused this to happen. The Firm, the first Harry Potter, Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix and now The Da Vinci Code.
I started reading last night at midnight. I couldn't put the book down until 530 am. I woke up at 1030 am, ate breakfast and started reading again. I have to admit, I ate breakfast, but I read while eating. The book is a murder mystery that is fast paced and fun to read. I have to admit that I didn't know "who dun it" but there were several clues that I could figure out. I was very psyched to figure out the very last clue before the main character did.
Very exciting read. Highly recommended. Don't bother trying to get it at the library, the waiting list at mine was over a year long.
Son: What's all that?
Dad: It is a computer file. A computer file is made up of a bunch of zeros and ones.
Son: Ahh, so the computer translates the zeros and ones into technicolor?
Dad: Technicolor?
Son: Yeah, the ones and zeros are green and black, but the computer turns it into all of the other colors for us to see.
Thank you Matrix.
Wow! I downloaded the latest IDEA last weekend (build 922, which has now been replaced with 926) and started a new project. I decided I wanted to keep this project and I wanted to save it in cvs. Unfortunately, I went through a system rebuild not so long ago, so I have not installed or configure WinCVS with SSH. I wondered, "What does IDEA have to offer?" What's this?? They have SSH support. Nifty. Lets give this a try. Just like everything else in IDEA... It just works.
:: sigh :: I love IntelliJ.
To the heros who have died, to the heros who have served, to the heros who are yet to come, I say Thank You.
A couple of days ago, I was surfing my favorite blogs when I came upon a link about IDEA Bashing. This link lead me to Ryan's blog entry about not understanding the IntelliJunkies TM love for IDEA. Ryan asserts that Eclipse has everything that IDEA has, plus it is free. That is a debate that is well covered on Ryan and Magnus' sites, so I will continue on about my merry way.
I wanted to check out the rest of their blogs, and I happened upon a conversation on Ryan's site that I have with my coworkers on a near daily basis. Stored procedures containing business logic. Where is the line that seperates business logic and how much should the database handle? I have coined a new term: Data Logic TM. Data Logic is short for stored procedures and I think accurately defines what stored procedures are responsible for; baby sitting the data.
I have told my friends. Now I am telling you. Buy Nokia stock. Nokia has announced a new PVR for the home. It has Bluetooth so you can send images from your phone to the PVR and store the images on the PVR. I seriously doubt that it will knock off TiVo, but it is one more stream of income.
I still haven't figured out what the bru-ha-ha over having a camera on your phone is all about, but apparently everyone wants it. Nokia sure does have some nice phones though :)
I just finished reading "Inside The Iron Triangle". A book about the Carlyle Group, how they came to be (found a nifty loop hole), who they employ (high level retired Republicans), and how they make their money (the old fashioned way, right place-right time). The author goes through the book looking for a conspiracy, always trying to say "See, those dirty Republicans are trying to run the world." but he never can really pull all of the evidence together to make it stick. As a matter of fact, during the last chapter he is asking why George Bush Sr. continues to be involved with this company even though it tarnishes his image. I think the answer is simple. George Bush Sr. continues working for Carlyle for the same reason most people stay at their jobs, he enjoys the work.
My opinion: Carlyle is a group of sharp business men that found a great formula for success when they hired Frank Carlucci. Hire people who have already proven to be influential and put them to work making smart deals.
