I just finished reading "Inside The Iron Triangle". A book about the Carlyle Group, how they came to be (found a nifty loop hole), who they employ (high level retired Republicans), and how they make their money (the old fashioned way, right place-right time). The author goes through the book looking for a conspiracy, always trying to say "See, those dirty Republicans are trying to run the world." but he never can really pull all of the evidence together to make it stick. As a matter of fact, during the last chapter he is asking why George Bush Sr. continues to be involved with this company even though it tarnishes his image. I think the answer is simple. George Bush Sr. continues working for Carlyle for the same reason most people stay at their jobs, he enjoys the work.
My opinion: Carlyle is a group of sharp business men that found a great formula for success when they hired Frank Carlucci. Hire people who have already proven to be influential and put them to work making smart deals.
